Protesters supporting President Jair Bolsonaro took to the streets of Brazil on Sunday to demand an armed forces intervention and reject the electoral victory of president-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Protesters waving Brazil’s yellow-and-green flags, and chanting slogans such as “S.O.S armed forces” marched in the cities of Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia a week after the presidential election results were declared.
Meanwhile, near Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro, supporters of President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva celebrated the victory of the leftist leader.
Bolsonaro, a right-wing nationalist, lost the election and has not conceded defeat but has stopped short of contesting the election result, and has authorized his chief of staff to begin the transition process with Lula’s representatives.
